Quality sleep is essential to a good and healthy life. People may say a good day starts with what you do in the morning, but really, a good day starts with how well you slept the night before.

If you don’t get a good night’s sleep, the next day will be difficult to enjoy and be productive because your body will want to focus on sleeping more. Not to mention, according to critics a lack of quality sleep comes with many serious health problems ranging from: depression and obesity, to high blood pressure, heart attacks, and heart failure.

Thus it is VITAL to value getting quality sleep! Because of this, I wanted to provide you with some useful ways to help you get better quality sleep asap! There are many ways to get higher-quality sleep. Below you will find my list of 5 things that I recommend to implement immediately into your nightly routine.

1. Go To Bed Earlier

To get better quality sleep, try going to bed a bit earlier than you usually do. It doesn’t have to be extensive like an hour or more earlier, it can be something like 15-30mins than you usually do. However, it wouldn’t be bad to go to sleep even earlier.

What this does is it helps give your body a bit more time to fall asleep and stay asleep, which helps give your body a longer chance to get the quality sleep it needs.

When you are able to sleep a bit longer, it allows your body to recover more through sleep so when you do wake up, you will feel much more refreshed and ready for the day compared to sleeping during your normal sleep schedule.

You might be amazed as to how much of a difference doing this one thing has on your body!

2. Read Before Bed

Not only is reading extremely beneficial for your mental health, it can also help give you good quality sleep. Reading before bed helps put your mind and body in a more relaxed state that gets you a lot more ready for sleep. As a result, when you do go to sleep, you sleep more soundly. The more soundly you sleep, the more refreshed you will feel getting out of bed! If you don’t enjoy reading though, try finding something that you would enjoy reading and read that.

As far as time goes, you don’t have to set aside a whole lot of time to read. It’s really up to you, but if you really want to get a good effect, the main idea is to make sure to read long enough until you feel your mind and eyes start to really doze and relax. Getting this effect will help make it much easier to go to sleep and stay asleep.

3. Consume Blueberries And Other Foods And Drinks That Have Relaxant Properties

Another way for you to get higher quality sleep is to eat foods and drink liquids that have relaxant properties. Foods such as blueberries are known to have a serious relaxant and calming effect on the body. And drinks such as Chamomile Tea has amazing sedative effects. Consuming these will help your mind and body relieve potential stress that could cause disrupted sleep. Just make sure you give your body time to digest before you head to bed.

If you don’t like blueberries, the link I provided in the previous paragraph for blueberries has other foods that are known to have relaxant properties and relieve stress. And same goes with Chamomile Tea. The main takeaway is to find foods and drinks you like that have a relaxant effect and shoot for consuming it during or after dinner so your body can have time to digest and absorb the nutrients before you head to bed.

4. At Night Avoid Foods And Drinks That Give Your Body Energy

A different way to get higher quality sleep is to do the opposite of number 3 which is to avoid drinks and foods that give you energy during the night. By preventing yourself from eating and drinking things that boost energy during the night, you will help keep your body more at ease instead of being in a heightened rush.

As a result, by the time you get in bed, your body will have fewer (if any) foods and liquids that could potentially trigger your body to want to stay awake while in bed. Diet can play a huge role in sleep, so compounding this tip with the last tip can really help put your body in a great state for getting better quality sleep!

In a world filled with fun and satisfying devices, it can be really easy to look at your phone, watch your favorite T.V. show, go on your tablet, hop on the computer, etc. But using these devices before you go to bed can really make it hard for you to get quality sleep. This is all due to the blue light that devices give off. Because of this, according to Harvard Medical School, it is recommended to stop using blue light devices 2-3hrs before you go to bed (the longer before you go to bed, the better!).

Not looking at your devices may not be ideal due to work or other things going on that are necessary to get done, so if you really have to look at it you should definitely consider getting top-rated blue light glasses, like these from Amazon. That way you can still reap the benefits of being exposed to less blue light, while still being able to do the things you need to do at night. So make sure you do what is necessary to limit blue light exposure at night so you can get better quality sleep so you can be refreshed in the morning!
